Snorkeling Pigeon Island: Coral Reefs, Reef Sharks, and Sea Turtles

Pigeon Island National Park is one of only two designated marine national parks in Sri Lanka. Situated roughly one kilometer off the coast of Nilaveli, the island gets its name from the endemic rock pigeons that nest on its rocky pinnacles. Below the waterline, however, lies an underwater sanctuary protected by shallow fringing coral reefs.

Underwater Encounters: What You Will See

The reefs surrounding Pigeon Island harbor dozens of coral varieties, including massive brain corals, branching staghorns, and soft leather corals that shelter over 300 species of reef fish.

  • Blacktip Reef Sharks: The shallow lagoon on the eastern side of the island serves as a regular cruising zone for juvenile and adult blacktip reef sharks. Growing up to 1.5 meters, these gentle, non-aggressive predators glide peacefully past snorkelers in waist-deep water.
  • Green and Hawksbill Turtles: Sea turtles graze along the sea beds and shallow coral shelves, often surfacing within arm’s reach of calm swimmers.
  • Vibrant Coral Communities: Expect to spot schools of neon damselfish, powder blue surgeonfish, parrotfish, moorish idols, and banded sea kraits weaving through the reef.

Practical Visitor Advice

  • Best Months to Visit: April to September delivers clear water visibility, often exceeding 20 meters, paired with minimal surface currents.
  • Getting There: Short 15-minute speed boat transfers run continuously from the Nilaveli shoreline directly to the island's sandy landing strip.
  • Reef Etiquette: The ecosystem is delicate. Avoid wearing heavy fins in shallow areas to prevent breaking fragile staghorn corals, never step on coral heads, and avoid using chemical sunscreens that cause coral bleaching.
